Benefits of yoga
Where to begin?! Yoga has so many benefits for the body, mind and spirit! It is a complete health system and can transform you into radical new ways of being! You will notice improved strength & flexibility, stronger focus and emotional stability. Concentration will improve and you will learn tools to self-heal and self-soothe. Yoga also has many therapeutic benefits such as improved immune functioning, better sleep, eases back pain, helps with depression and anxiety… really the list goes on! The greatest gift yoga can offer you is the opportunity to find a deeper connection with yourself and others.
If you have never practiced yoga before, this is the class for you! The class is based on the optimal alignment of the body and taught at a slower pace with the support of yoga props so that beginners can cultivate the body awareness required to practice yoga safely. Detailed explanations are provided and questions are encouraged. The class consists of physical postures and breath work with time for relaxation at the end. Aimed at beginners but also good for maintaining a regular practice. All levels welcome.
Yin yoga is very therapeutic and healing for the body. It can release deep held tensions specifically in the hips and spine. Through long supported holds we are able to work deeply within our joints and release tension/pressure. Yin Yoga postures apply moderate stress to the connective tissues—the tendons, fascia, and ligaments—with the aim of increasing circulation and improving flexibility. Yin Yoga is said to improve organ health, immunity, and emotional well-being. All levels of experience welcome.
A flowing sequence of postures that synchronizes the breath with movement. This invigorating practice has a focus on core strength, breath awareness and weaves principles of alignment with energetic movements. This is a dynamic fast paced class for those who enjoy a total workout in the body, mind and soul! In this class we will explore inversions, arm balances and deep backbends, not suitable for beginners. Some previous experience is assumed.
This is a open level Vinyasa Flow class (vinyasa means ‘intelligent sequencing’). In this class the breath is linked together with a creative progression of postures that heats, lengthens, strengthens, tones, and purifies the muscles and organs. When we flow with our breath, moving from one posture to another, we find a meditation in motion. The connecting movements become as important as the postures themselves. Each instructor offers unique sequencing that includes sun salutations, standing, balancing, seated and inverted postures. All levels welcome.
Hot Yoga is taught in a territory heated room (no fans and no air con!) Heated environments increase your pulse rate, metabolism and allow your blood vessels to expand & become more flexible. This makes circulation easier and increases blood flow to your limbs. You will notice improved flexibility as the body heats up. Expect to be challenged, to sweat bucket loads (!!) and to have a whole lot of fun! Although you will get hot, the act of sweating helps to control your internal body temperature. Please bring a towel and water bottle. All levels welcome.
Designed especially for the pregnant woman’s needs! Through yoga postures, guided relaxation and breath awareness you will prepare the body & mind for childbirth, and at the same time relieve the discomfort and stress associated with pregnancy. Expect a combination of active, strong poses as well as restorative postures to help relax and re-energize. Beginners welcome.
Share the joy of yoga with your little one and take the time to re-connect with yourself. The Mums & Bubs Yoga Class is designed to help you rebalance your body after pregnancy, regain strength and flexibility and to deepen the existing bond you have with your baby. Come and enjoy a relaxing, supportive environment as well as providing you with an opportunity to meet other new Mums. Suitable for children up to 12 months old. Beginners welcome.
Pilates Mat Classes are the floor work version of the Pilates method. These classes take place in a group setting using your own body weight as the primary source of resistance. Classes emphasize the foundational principals of Pilates while offering modifications and variations to suit each students individual needs. Focus is placed on precise movements originating from the center or core of your body with an emphasis on correct technique. Pilates is a fantastic compliment to your yoga practice, you will notice improved overall body strength and flexibility.
Yoga was definitely love at first practice for me. It was everything I was searching for… the physical, the mental and the spiritual all combined into one. I come from a background of various styles including Hatha, Vinyasa Flow, Yin Yoga, Bikram, Iyengar, Ashtanga and most recently Acro yoga! I love all yoga and I teach my classes drawing inspiration from many different styles. To me yoga is not just about the physical postures themselves, it is also the commitment to being our authentic & best self. Choosing to live my life by the 8 limbs of yoga, yoga extends beyond the mat and into my relationships with others & myself! I feel very blessed to be able to share my personal practice with the community of Darwin and hope that everyone who walks through our doors feels very welcome and supported in their own yoga practice. It is my intention to offer a space for both balance & healing between the mind, body and soul.
I’m a multi-talented yoga teacher. I studied environmental science at university and get all fired up about conservation, especially when its ocean related. I’m a passionate photographer and I love to travel. Yoga has been a part of my life since my mum introduced it to me almost 15 years ago, but if I’m being honest it was an on again off again affair…. That was until 5 years ago when I met Julie Smerdon in Brisbane, Australia and my love affair with yoga became a full blown relationship. There were fireworks and trumpets... just kidding but there was something about the way Julie taught that made me want to keep coming back to her classes and keep showing up for myself on the mat. She also started me on my path to becoming a yoga teacher. The best thing about yoga is that it doesn’t just happen ‘on the mat’. We get stronger and more flexible for sure but the practice of yoga also helps us to be the best version of our self. My classes focus on good alignment and connecting with the breath, the poses we do vary but at the core all of my classes focus on being present and moving consciously, on finding your subtle body and realigning the breath, body and mind. They can also be pretty fun too, we don’t take things to seriously….it is just yoga after all! I have completed a number of teacher trainings and am constantly updating my qualifications….What can I say I love yoga, I love teaching and I love to learn. I look forward to seeing you on the mat.
I completed my yoga teacher training in Rishikesh, located in the foot hills of the Indian Himalayas. While there I was lucky enough to have a class with the founder of the school, 106 year old Swami Yogananda Maharaj Ji. This was an incredible first-hand look at the amazing benefits yoga has for the body; these benefits alone are reason enough to practice yoga. However, for me, it is yoga’s ability to clarify the mind, to soothe stress and to teach you about yourself that fuels my passion. My style of yoga is strong, fast flowing and full of creative and challenging flows.
My aim is to guide you through the practice and to encourage you to explore your capabilities and limitations, allowing yourself to shape your own individual practice in a way which pushes you to your edge, a point which requires persistence and where you find growth, whether physical or mental. I look forward to sharing my practice with you.
Yoga truly is, a journey to Align the mind with Body and Spirit. A journey of self discovery and self acceptance. A journey that never ends. Travelling through Guatemala I crossed paths with a Yoga Teacher whom became my best friend. We spent months venturing through Central America, waking at sunrise and practicing Yoga. The more consistent my practice, the more I cultivated silence of the mind, the more I became aware of the breath, the more Invigorated and Energised I felt. On my return to Australia I found myself at Agoy, attending my first (Real) Yoga class, taught by CJ. She defiantly reinforced my love for Yoga and the strong desire I felt to teach. Continuously committed to progressing within my Yoga practice, I took the leap and studied the 200 YTT at Byron Yoga Centre. Learning the infinite depths of Asana, Pranayama, Meditation and Philosophy. Yoga now is a MASSIVE part of my life and I am so grateful for the Agoy Yoga Community. In class, I hold space for one to move creatively with their breath and achieve absolute control over the whole body, thus improving flexibility, Balance and Strength. I hope to inspire one to quiet the mind during practice, cultivate deep presence and to accept the process. You don’t have to change to be a Yogi, you simply just have to be. Namaste.
Yoga does not just change the way we see things, it transforms the person who sees.” – B.K.S Iyengar. This has been my experience and continues to be. I’ve always had a deep spiritual belief and continue to practice my Christian faith but I did not know something amazing was missing. And that piece of the puzzle which was missing was how to build a relationship between my body, mind and spirit. I was first introduced to Yoga by a gorgeous older couple whom I lived with when I first moved to Darwin. I saw how Yoga was integrated into their everyday lives. They radiated happiness and were the inspiration that started me on this path, which began with Iyengar Yoga. Like many others, the physical aspect of Yoga attracted me – to move and stretch my body in a way which created length and space within me. Over 5 years of exploring Iyengar, Hatha and Vinyasa practices, I not only observed physical changes, but spiritual, mental and emotional changes. I discovered that Yoga became a practice for me on how to REdiscover my soul – a framework on how to align myself to my true self and empower me to find my life purpose. I’ve learnt through Yoga how essential it is to have a positive relationship with the body and mind so the spirit is allowed to fully shine through and lead. To create space, release and free ourselves from obstacles within our bodies. I strive to bring about this change in my students through all I’ve learnt in my Hatha Teacher Training with Zuna Yoga and with what I will continue to learn from my students, teachers and future teachers.
I am Krista and I'm from Kingston, Canada. I attended my first yoga class while at university and have stuck with the practice ever since. I immediately loved yoga as it was the only way I could find to relax my body and my mind, while getting a good work out as well. I continued to practice in group classes for the rest of my degree. I began a self practice shortly there after while on tour overseas with the military. It was during this time that yoga became more than part of my daily exercise routine and became a vital part of my mental, physical and spiritual health and wellbeing. Shortly after leaving the military I left Canada to travel South America, Australia and Europe. After maintaining a dedicated practice while traveling overseas I returned home to Canada in 2010 to complete my Masters degree. It was during this time I realized my true passions for yoga, wanting to share my excitement and love for the practice with others and decided to become a Yoga Alliance certified yoga instructor. My teaching style is anatomy based and suitable for all levels, ages and abilities of practitioners. I give many cues and offer various levels of difficulty in each pose allowing the student to make the practice their own.
Yoga has been part of my life for +10 years and over these years I’ve explored many different styles such as Hatha, Vinyasa Flow, Iyenger, Kundalini, Power yoga and Yin yoga. I also had a very short addiction to Bikram yoga too! The attraction to yoga was realized by accident and initially I attended a weekly class to help get me through a busy week in a sometimes stressful working environment. This evolved to attending multiple classes each week and the thought and possibility of training to become a teacher. It was in 2015 that the timing was right to complete my 200 hour YTT at Desa Seni in Bali. Since then my own practice has deepened and incorporates a stronger focus on meditation and pranayama as well as a flowing physical practice. Currently I’m enjoying exploring Kundalini yoga and having some fun with Acro Yoga. My teaching creates space for people to explore their individual practice, to work safely with their own bodies using the guiding principles of body alignment. As I teach the words of one of my teachers continues to resonate with me “don’t use your body to get into a pose, use the pose to get into your body”. This connection to body, for me, helps to transition yoga on the matt into daily life and into my own awareness. The power of the body-mind connection continues to fascinate me, and I have a strong desire to understand this connection further physically and scientifically. This year I’ve completed 50 hr training in yin biodynamic craniosacral therapy. I’m excited to continue my yoga journey and work towards achieving 500 hr YTT qualifications. I look forward to seeing you at the studio. Namaste.
